After my mother-in-law passed away, I started helping my father-in-law with laundry and other chores. He asks me to add aspirin to the washing machine every time I do the laundry. When I asked him why, he said that’s how his wife used to do it. Any idea what aspirin does?

Adding aspirin to laundry is an old household trick some people used decades ago. Your father-in-law probably remembers it from when his wife did the laundry that way. Here’s what the idea behind it is:

🧺 What Aspirin Is Supposed to Do in Laundry

1️⃣ Help whiten clothes
Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid, which can break down some residues in fabric. Some people believed dissolving a few tablets in water could help brighten white clothes and reduce yellowing.

2️⃣ Help remove sweat stains
The mild acidity may help loosen sweat and body-oil stains, especially in white shirts.

3️⃣ Soak treatment before washing
Traditionally people would dissolve 4–5 uncoated aspirin tablets in warm water and soak clothes before washing to help lift stains.

⚠️ Important Reality Check

  • The effect is mild and not scientifically proven to work better than modern detergents.
  • Many modern laundry detergents already contain enzymes and whitening agents that work much better.
  • Aspirin tablets with coatings may not dissolve well and could leave residue.

👍 Better Modern Alternatives

  • Oxygen bleach (like sodium percarbonate) for whitening
  • Baking soda for odor removal
  • Hydrogen peroxide for stain lifting

💡 Why He Still Does It

Most likely it’s habit and nostalgia. People often keep using methods they learned from a spouse or parent because it reminds them of how things were done in the past.

✅ Bottom line: Aspirin in laundry was an old trick meant to help whiten and remove sweat stains, but modern detergents usually do the job better.
