Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic

Posted on March 12, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a classic Southern-style fried cabbage recipe that’s savory, comforting, and full of flavor. 🥓🥬🧄

Ingredients

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, chopped
  • 4–6 strips bacon, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: red pepper flakes or smoked paprika for extra kick

Instructions

  1. Cook the bacon
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook chopped bacon until crispy.
    • Remove bacon and set aside, leaving the rendered fat in the pan.
  2. Sauté onion and garlic
    • Add diced onion to the bacon fat and cook until translucent (~3–4 minutes).
    • Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Cook the cabbage
    • Add chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir to coat in bacon fat and onions.
    • Cook, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized (~10–15 minutes).
  4. Combine and season
    • Stir in the crispy bacon.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and optional spices to taste.
  5. Serve warm
    • This dish pairs perfectly with roasted meats, mashed potatoes, or even on its own as a hearty side.

💡 Tips for extra flavor:

  • Add a splash of apple cider vinegar near the end for a tangy brightness.
  • Sprinkle fresh parsley on top before serving for color and freshness.

This dish is simple but irresistible—crispy bacon, sweet onions, and garlicky cabbage all in one skillet!

If you like, I can also give you a quick 15-minute skillet version that keeps the cabbage slightly crunchy for a fresher texture. 🥬✨
