Here’s how often you should wash your hair, according to a dermatologist.

Posted on March 12, 2026 by Admin

Dermatologists say there is no single rule for how often you should wash your hair. The right frequency depends on your scalp type, hair texture, and daily activities.

1. Oily hair or scalp

  • Every day or every other day
People with oily scalps produce more natural oil (sebum), so washing more often helps prevent buildup and greasiness.

2. Normal hair

  • Every 2–3 days
This keeps the scalp clean while still allowing natural oils to protect the hair.

3. Dry, thick, or curly hair

  • 1–2 times per week
Curly or coarse hair tends to be drier, so frequent washing can remove important natural oils and cause frizz.

4. Very curly or coily hair

  • About once a week or even less
These hair types benefit from more moisture and less frequent shampooing.

5. If you sweat a lot

If you exercise regularly or sweat heavily, you may need to wash more often to remove sweat, dirt, and product buildup.

Signs your hair needs washing

  • Greasy or flat-looking hair
  • Itchy scalp
  • Visible flakes or buildup

✅ Bottom line:
Most people wash their hair every 1–3 days, but the ideal schedule depends on your scalp’s oil production and your hair type.
