I’ve always thrown away the oil cap – a colleague explained to me what it was actually used for

Posted on March 10, 2026 by Admin

Many people throw away the little plastic cap inside a new bottle of Olive Oil or cooking oil, thinking it’s just packaging. But it actually has a useful purpose.

What that oil cap is for

When you open a new bottle, there’s often a small plastic insert or cap under the lid. Instead of discarding it, you can:

1. Turn it into a drip-control spout
Flip the cap over and press it back into the bottle opening. It works as a flow regulator, letting oil pour more slowly and preventing spills.

2. Prevent over-pouring
With the insert in place, the oil comes out in a thin stream, which helps you control the amount used in cooking or salads.

3. Reduce mess
It also helps stop oil from running down the side of the bottle, keeping the bottle cleaner.

Why manufacturers include it

The insert acts as both a tamper seal (showing the bottle hasn’t been opened) and a pour-control device once flipped and reinserted.

✅ Bottom line: That little cap isn’t just packaging—it’s meant to be reused as a built-in pour spout to control the flow of oil.
